Topic | “Types of Mycotoxins“. Mycotoxins are the toxic composition of molds that generally grow in the home, they can be quite dangerous at times.
Health risks imparted by mycotoxins include respiratory infections, headaches, chronic fatigue and in extreme cases, even death.
Needless to say, remove molds immediately and if the situation is really bad, it’s better left to the experts.
Mycotoxins in molds can be of 6 different kinds, a brief description of all kinds is given below.
Here are Types of Mycotoxins:
Aflatoxins are usually found in Aspergillus, which is essentially a species of fungus (mold). Aflatoxins include four different kinds of mycotoxins, namely B1, B2, G1, and G2.
Out of these types, B1 is the most dangerous with very concerning health risks associated. It a carcinogen is known to cause liver cancer.
Crops and plants are most prone to be infected by Aflatoxins.
It is generally found in three different metabolite forms, namely A, B and C. Ochratoxins are usually produce by Aspergillus and Penicillium.
A, B and C differ in their toxic and chemical compositions. They infect fruit juices and beverages and type A is a known carcinogen.
Citrinin is found in more than 12 species of Penicillium and Aspergillus. They usually infect rice and other crops.
However, they are also commonly found in cheese, soy sauce, and other edibles.
Furthermore, health risks have not been identified yet, however they are known to affect the kidneys adversely.
The mycotoxin is most commonly found in species of Claviceps. Claviceps are pathogenic to different types of grass.
Human health risks are very adverse. They include damage to the blood supply and the central nervous system.
Found in species or Aspergillus and Penicillium, Patulin is not a carcinogen. However, it does weaken the immune system.
It is found in small quantities in fruit juices and other beverages.
It is generally found in over 50 species of Fusarium and can be very fatal.
Known to cause cancer in some species and affect the nervous system of certain species too. It has 3 three different types.
